Integrated Fuzzy-Stochastic Groundwater Simulation and Environmental Risk Assessment

EIL has been actively involved in research of environmental problems from petroleum industries. EIL was awarded 2 NSERC Strategic Grants for studying groundwater and air pollution problems from petroleum industries. As a new attempt, EIL members developed a 3D fuzzy-stochastic groundwater simulation model based on the soil and climate conditions in the prairie; this unique model facilitates quantification of risks associated with uncertainties in source, medium, and impact conditions, as well as exploration of inexact simulation-optimization methodologies for supporting process control of remediation practices. The developed methods have been applied to a number of real-world case studies supported by NSERC (Strategic, IOR and Research Grants), TransGas Ltd., PTRC, and Husky Oil. For example, in the research of the Hoosier Gas Plant Site for TransGas Ltd., the results of numerical simulation, pilot-scale modeling, risk assessment, and remediation design received a highly favorable appraisal from the company, leading to an extended provision of funding for studying other contaminated sites.
